Day 2 – Melbourne to Twelve Apostles Lodge Walk
Depart from Melbourne and join your guide and small group for a four-day Twelve Apostles Guided Walk. After your guide briefs you on the trip and sets you up with your gear, it’s off to Castle Cove to start walking!
Begin your first day of walking along cliff-top ocean vistas before entering an enchanting grass tree forest. Soon after, drop down onto Johanna Beach for about a mile of beach walking with the ocean only steps away. The soft sand offers a great opportunity to take off your boots and feel the sand under your feet. Just don’t turn your back to the unpredictable waves! After walking the beach, you’ll cross the Johanna River and choose whether to take the easy 1.8 mile stroll back to the lodge or have your guide call for road support to come and get you! Total walking distance is about 3.7 miles.
The following three nights are spent at the trekking lodge on Johanna Beach, staying in eco-luxe villas with ensuite bathrooms, flushing toilets, fresh linen and hot showers. Enjoy a fine dinner with fellow guests and relax to the sound of waves crashing in the distance.
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner – Overnight: Trekking Lodge on Johanna Beach
Day 3 – Twelve Apostles Lodge Walk – Milanesia Gate to Moonlight Head
This is your hardest day out on track, but it offers spectacular seascapes and covers some of the most remote parts of the Great Ocean Walk. The challenge delivers great rewards and the wild, weathered headlands give you a sense that you’re at the world’s edge.
The ocean is your steadfast companion across the 7.7 miles of rolling terrain, beginning with a descent to Milanesia Beach. Here, your guide will point out a ‘natural rock wall’ that would be the envy of any budding climber. After a fleeting beach visit, it’s a short but bracing climb that whispers of inclines to come. Over the next hours, your trail carves its way through deep gullies with tree ferns and towering remnant Eucalyptus. There’s 132 steps to ascend before trailing west out of the forest to Ryan’s Den. On suitable days, this is your lunch perch. The Den gifts with unsurpassed views across to Cape Volney and Cape Otway.
Further along the trail, as it follows the tumbles and rises of the coastline, keep an eye out for Cape Volney. There’s a bench that, if time allowed, could swallow hours. Heaving seas disappear into watery caves. Views west travel to the horizon’s edge. And the entire spectacle is framed by the forest.
Total Walking Distance: 8 miles
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner – Overnight: Trekking Lodge on Johanna Beach
Day 4 – Twelve Apostles Lodge Walk – Moonlight Head to Princetown
Shipwrecks, sandy pathways, exposed heathland, and maybe even your first glimpse of the Apostles mark this day of hiking. Start at The Gables Lookout, one of Australia’s highest cliff-top vistas. After the challenging ups and downs of yesterday, this day is more pleasant and mild.
More than 300 ships have come to grief on this stretch of coastline. Your first stop is the aptly named Wreck Beach, a suitable reminder of the early ocean voyages across these treacherous waters. If conditions allow, you’ll drop down to Wreck Beach and hear tales of pillaging and misfortune, including a ship which traveled from China only to sink with its cargo of tea and tint the ocean. Depending on the tides, an alternate route leads through to Devils Kitchen, home to arguably Australia’s best lavatory vista!
Following lunch, notice how the geology begins to change from sandstone to limestone. Thick Eucalypti forest gives way to sections of moonscape, indicators of what’s in store. Keep an eye out for native rosemary, cushion plants, and wild flowers in season. Your first glimpse of the Gellibrand River marks the entrance to Port Campbell National Park. This freshwater river near the sleepy hamlet of Princetown is an easy downhill stroll. After some 8 miles, reward yourself with a cooling river dip.
Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner – Overnight: Trekking Lodge on Johanna Beach
Day 5 – Twelve Apostles Lodge Walk – Princetown to The Twelve Apostles
Enjoy your final morning at the Walking Lodge. After another tasty breakfast, there’s a final pack-up, check-out and lodge farewell as we again head west to Princetown. As you follow the trail along the coastline, The Twelve Apostles will emerge in the distance in a slow reveal. Also keep your eye out of the two resident mobs of kangaroos in the area! Stop at the viewpoint reserved exclusively for walkers before the final stretch of trail into the 12 Apostles Visitors Center. You’ve made it!
Now take to the skies with a stunning ten minute 12 Apostles Scenic Helicopter Flight for an unparalleled view of this amazing coast. Move on to the nearby town of Port Campbell for lunch before transferring back to Melbourne. Enjoy a free night in Melbourne!
